Mikel Jones
About Me
My name is Mikel Jones and I am a junior at Penn State University majoring in broadcast journalism. I am originally from Boynton Beach, Florida and grew up their with both of my parents and my sister. I have known that I wanted to be a journalist ever since I was the sports editor of my high school newspaper, The Cobra Chronicle.
My involvement with Penn State has grown over the years. I started off by joining the campus radio station, ComRadio, and eventually became part of multiple talk shows including The ComRadio Morning Show. The experience I have had so far in the broadcasting field has been incredible. In summer of 2013, I had the opportunity to intern with the ABC affilicate in West Palm Beach, FL, WPBF News. This summer, I will be interning with NBC Washington, WRC.
While at Penn State I have also become involved with other organizations such as Lion Ambassadors, which is the university's student-alumni corps. Our organization gives campus tours to prospective and accepted students. I also serve on the executive board as the Director of Communications. The Penn State Dance Marathon, or THON, has also become a huge part of my life. It is the world's largest student-run philanthropy, which raises money for the fight against pediatric cancer. This past year I had the honor of serving as a communications captain and meeting so many children who are battling with the disease. I also have a part-time job on campus as a head lifeguard.
One of my other passions is working with children. Since 2009, I have been a summer camp counselor at YMCA Camp Thunderbird. I have had the chance to make an impact on so many children and teach many activities such as tennis, kayaking, digital media and sailing. I love dealing with children because I believe that they are the future. My parents always taught me that. In fact, they are my greatest heroes and I owe everything I have accomplished to them.
Working on feature stories is perhaps my favorite part of the business because I love learning about certain people and certain things on a more in-depth level. I hope to one day report in a top market.
